World of Tourism Day Malaysia starts September 26

Kuala Lumpur – In conjunction with the World Tourism Day which will be held on 27 September, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC) will organise a national event, which will serve as platform to create awareness among the public on the importance of community role for a stronger sustainable development of the industry.

The World Tourism Day Malaysia 2014 celebration will be held for three consecutive days from 26 September to 28 September, at the Mall of Medini, Nusajaya, Johore. This year’s celebration is aptly themed ‘Tourism And Community Development’.

Introduced in 1980 by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), World Tourism Day is celebrated on 27 September every year to commemorate the contribution and importance of tourism in shaping and influencing social values, culture, politics and the world economy. The global celebration for this year will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico.

During the three-day festivities, numerous activities will be held such as the WTD2014 Treasure Hunt which will take participants to tourist destinations around Johor, interactive traditional games, a special appearance by the pre-historic Perak Man, one-of-a-kind exhibition of ancient manuscripts, as well as cultural performances.

To create awareness and increase participation from the public, MOTAC has launched a hashtag campaign ( # ) MYWorldTourismDay which encourages public to upload photos of their visits to tourist destinations in the country into their social websites to show their support for the tourism industry.The celebration in Johor is open to public and admission is free.
