MetMalaysia Issues Warning on Heavy Rainfall and Floods

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued an urgent warning of heavy continuous rain expected to affect multiple states across the country from January 15 to 18. This weather event, attributed to an impending monsoon surge, is forecasted to cause intense rainfall in Peninsular Malaysia, southern and western Sarawak, and parts of Sabah.

In a statement on January 12, MetMalaysia emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “Analysis of the latest weather forecast models indicates that a monsoon surge is expected to occur from Jan 15 to 18, which may lead to heavy and continuous rainfall in several areas across the country.”

The public has been urged to stay informed by referring to MetMalaysia’s website, official social media platforms, and the myCuaca mobile application for real-time updates and safety information.

Flooding Threatens Vulnerable Areas

The warning comes as flooding continues to affect regions in Malaysia, with the southern state of Johor experiencing a significant surge in the number of evacuees. As of January 12, over 3,000 residents have been displaced due to rising floodwaters.

Earlier forecasts by MetMalaysia on January 10 highlighted danger-level torrential rain in parts of Pahang and Johor. Both states remain at high risk of further flooding as heavy rains are anticipated to persist.

Precautionary Measures and Public Safety

Authorities have called on residents in vulnerable regions to remain vigilant and prepare for possible evacuations. Emergency response teams are on standby to manage potential disasters, and local governments are coordinating efforts to ensure the safety of affected communities.

MetMalaysia has advised travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys in flood-prone areas and has urged the public to stay updated with accurate weather information to mitigate risks.

Impact on Sarawak and Sabah

In addition to Peninsular Malaysia, areas in the south and west of Sarawak and parts of Sabah are expected to bear the brunt of the intense rainfall. Communities in these regions are advised to take extra precautions as the prolonged downpour may lead to flash floods, landslides, and disruptions to transportation and communication networks.

Rising Concerns Over Flood Management

The increasing frequency of extreme weather events in Malaysia has drawn attention to the need for improved flood mitigation infrastructure. Experts warn that monsoon surges, compounded by climate change, are likely to intensify in the coming years, necessitating long-term strategies to safeguard lives and livelihoods.

Stay Safe and Informed

MetMalaysia continues to monitor the situation closely and will issue updates as conditions develop. The department’s website, social media channels, and the myCuaca app are reliable sources for the latest information on the ongoing weather situation.

The public is encouraged to remain alert and take all necessary precautions to minimize risks during this period of heavy rainfall. (zai)
