Earthquake Strikes Myanmar and Thailand: Hundreds Dead

BANGKOK – A catastrophic earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck central Myanmar near Mandalay at 12:50 PM local time on March 28. The seismic event caused widespread destruction and was felt across neighboring countries, including Thailand and parts of southwestern China.

Casualties and Damage in Myanmar

In Myanmar, the earthquake resulted in at least 144 fatalities and over 700 injuries. Significant structural damage occurred, with buildings, bridges, and dams affected. The historic city of Mandalay experienced severe impacts, including the collapse of structures and damage to critical infrastructure. The military junta has declared a state of emergency in six regions and, in a rare move, appealed for international assistance to aid in rescue and relief efforts.

Impact in Thailand

In Thailand, the tremors were strongly felt in Bangkok, located approximately 800 miles from the epicenter. A high-rise building under construction in the capital collapsed, resulting in at least 10 deaths and trapping dozens. Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to free those still trapped under the rubble.

Government Responses

  • Myanmar: The ruling military junta has called for international aid and declared a state of emergency in the most affected regions. Efforts are underway to assess the full extent of the damage and to coordinate rescue and relief operations.
  • Thailand: Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has assured the public that all necessary assistance will be provided to those affected. Authorities have issued warnings about potential aftershocks and are advising residents and tourists to remain vigilant.

Aftershocks and Safety Measures

Experts warn that aftershocks are likely to continue in the coming days and possibly weeks. Residents and visitors in affected areas are advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities.

Impact on Tourism and Transportation

Thailand, a major tourist destination, is addressing concerns from millions of tourists currently in the country. The government is working to ensure the safety of all visitors and has set up information centers to provide updates. As of now, there have been no official reports of airport closures. Travelers are advised to check with airlines and local authorities for the latest information on flight schedules and transportation services.

International Aid and Support

The international community has responded to Myanmar’s call for assistance. The United Nations has allocated $5 million for recovery efforts, and various countries, including the United States, have offered support. Pope Francis has also expressed his condolences and prayers for the victims.  (zai)
