Apple: AirTags to be shared with airlines

CUPERTINO – Travelers will soon be able to temporarily share the location data of their AirTags with airlines to help locate lost luggage more quickly. With the new iOS 18.2 update, Apple is responding to the growing use of AirTags by travelers, who equip their suitcases with these small trackers to ensure their luggage reaches the correct destination after a flight.

The feature for temporarily sharing AirTag location data allows users to share the tracker’s position with “trusted individuals or airlines.” This aims to make it easier to locate lost luggage. Users can activate the feature by adjusting the AirTag location sharing settings in the “Find My” app. Once the location of an AirTag is shared, the airline or selected individual will receive a link to a map displaying the exact position of the luggage. Optionally, contact information can also be provided so that finders can easily reach out to the travelers or the airline.

The feature will be available in the coming months with more than 15 airlines, including well-known carriers like Lufthansa and Eurowings from Germany. These partnerships are designed to help both airlines and passengers locate lost luggage more quickly and easily, improving the overall travel experience. (zai)
