BERLIN – Simmy Chhun, known in the fashion industry as CHHUN LI ESIM, is a Cambodian designer with a rich heritage in tailoring. Her fashion label “TREY” was part of the Berlin Fashion Week (July 1-4). Here, the designer presented her latest designs under the title of “Renaissance” – a captivating collection that encapsulates the essence of timeless elegance.
Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of Renaissance paintings, her collection features hand-made beading and Swarovski crystal-embellished gowns and bodices, meticulously crafted from luxurious EU-produced lace, and quality silks.
In addition to the runway show, guests had the privilege of witnessing a sacred dance performance by the Cambodian Royal Ballet – a reflection of the designer’s strong connection to the fashion culture of her homeland, Cambodia.
Born into the TEP CHIVNGOR Tailor family, which boasts over 30 years of tailoring expertise in Phnom Penh, Simmy’s foray into fashion seemed almost predestined. After completing her high school education, she pursued her passion for fashion and art, earning a diploma from Raffles International College in 2013. Her quest for excellence in design took her to Central Saint Martins in the UK, and later to ESMOD Fashion School in Berlin, where she honed her skills amidst Europe’s dynamic fashion scene.
Fashion inspiration from Phnom Penh and Berlin
Simmy’s professional journey is marked by her roles as an intern, assistant designer, visual merchandiser, pattern maker, and project manager, working with prestigious brands such as TOM FORD, DIOR, MCQUEEN, AGENT PROVOCATEUR, LVMH, and the KADEWE Group. Her specialization in women’s wear led her to explore the world of lingerie, culminating in the creation of Trey Lingerie.
Her brand, TREY, draws inspiration from the vibrant energy of Phnom Penh and Berlin, aiming to empower women through its products. The name ‘TREY’ in Khmer means fish, symbolizing happiness and abundance, and is closely associated with femininity, transformation, creativity, and eternity.
Trey’s Lingerie was founded on 08.08.21 during the global health pandemic, reflecting Simmy’s long-standing experience in the fashion industries of Germany and the United Kingdom. The brand’s mission is to promote women’s health and healthy lifestyles, with a commitment to environmental sustainability and high-quality, handcrafted designs. (AT) Photos: hz/AT
