JAKARTA – Seven people have drowned after a group of tourists trying to take a selfie caused a boat to capsize on a reservoir in Indonesia.
Police said the boat overturned when all 20 passengers onboard suddenly moved to one side to take a group photo on Saturday at Java island.
“The cause of the accident was overcapacity,” Central Java police chief told reporters. “The 20 people took a selfie on the right side then the boat lost balance and flipped.”
Seven Indonesians were found dead, with 11 others being rescued.
There are still two people missing following the boat tragedy.
Authorities said they would investigate whether there was negligence involved. The boat was steered by a 13-year-old.
