BANGKOK – Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra criticized Myanmar’s navy after it fired on Thai fishing boats on November 30, killing one fisherman, injuring two, and detaining dozens. The vessels were reportedly 7.4-10.6km inside Myanmar’s waters near Ranong, though Ms. Shinawatra questioned these claims, urging restraint and nonviolence.
A formal protest was lodged by Thai Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, demanding the immediate release of four detained Thai nationals and a detailed account of the incident. Myanmar’s junta has yet to comment. (zai)
