Singapore’s Ruling PAP Party Secures Stronger Mandate

SINGAPORE — In the 2025 general election held on May 3, Singapore’s ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) achieved a decisive victory, securing 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats. This marks the PAP’s 14th consecutive win since the nation’s independence in 1965. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who succeeded Lee Hsien Loong in 2024, the party increased its share of the popular vote to 65.6%, up from 61% in the 2020 election.

The election results are seen as a public endorsement of the PAP’s emphasis on stability and continuity amid global economic challenges, including trade tensions and rising living costs. Singapore’s economy, heavily reliant on international trade, faces potential headwinds from ongoing geopolitical uncertainties.

Prime Minister Wong acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating that the government must prepare for a “storm brewing over the country,” referring to the fundamental changes in the international order and economic landscape. He emphasized the need for Singapore to adapt and find its place amid these global shifts.

The opposition Workers’ Party (WP) retained its 10 seats in Parliament, maintaining its position as the main opposition force. Despite fielding candidates in only a third of the electoral districts, the WP managed to secure about 15% of the popular vote, reflecting a modest increase from the previous election.

International leaders, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, congratulated Prime Minister Wong on the election victory, highlighting the strong bilateral ties between Singapore and their respective countries.

As Singapore navigates the evolving global economic landscape, the government faces the task of addressing domestic concerns such as rising living costs and ensuring sustained economic growth. The PAP’s renewed mandate provides a platform to implement policies aimed at bolstering the nation’s resilience in the face of external uncertainties. (zai)
