South Korea: President Yoon Suk Yeol Resists Impeachment

SEOUL – Despite mounting pressure and growing opposition, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol appears determined to hold onto power, at least for now, as the nation grapples with the fallout from his disastrous attempt to impose martial law earlier this week.

Yoon’s ruling People Power Party (PPP) has rallied around him, staunchly opposing calls for his impeachment after his botched martial law declaration on the night of December 3, which led to widespread confusion and chaos lasting six hours. This failed move has sparked legal and political backlash, with police now investigating Yoon for treason.

Opposition lawmakers have tabled a motion to impeach Yoon on December 7, accusing him of “violating the Constitution and the law.” However, the motion is unlikely to pass, as it requires a majority in the legislature, which the PPP currently controls. Despite this, the impeachment bid highlights the growing discontent over Yoon’s leadership and the political storm surrounding his presidency. (hb)
