EU and ASEAN Strengthen Ties in Strategic Partnership

BRUSSELS – The European Union (EU) has taken a significant step forward in its relationship with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with the publication of the EU-ASEAN Strategic Partnership Blue Book for the years 2024-2025.

This comprehensive document not only serves as a testament to the enduring partnership between the two regions but also highlights the EU’s unwavering support for ASEAN’s community-building efforts. The Blue Book details the progress and achievements made in the implementation of the Plan of Action to Implement the ASEAN-EU Strategic Partnership for the period 2023-2027, emphasizing the mutual benefits that have arisen from this collaboration.

The Blue Book outlines the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, which introduces new cooperation programs aimed at reinforcing the strategic partnership. These programs are designed to ensure regional peace and security, foster sustainable connectivity, promote free and fair trade, and advance sustainable development across ASEAN member states. One of the key features of the Blue Book is the spotlight on the EU Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Centers of Excellence. These centers play a pivotal role in strengthening CBRN risk mitigation in Southeast Asia, contributing significantly to the safety and security of the ten partner countries in the region.

The publication marks a 47-year history of cooperation and multilateralism championed by the EU and ASEAN. It is a clear indication of the EU’s commitment to supporting ASEAN in various areas, including biosafety and biosecurity, border control and monitoring, crisis management, and public health impact mitigation, among others. The Blue Book also addresses the legal framework, investigation and prosecution, protection of material and facilities, and waste management, showcasing the depth and breadth of the EU-ASEAN partnership.

The EU-ASEAN Strategic Partnership Blue Book 2024-2025 is a valuable platform that not only showcases the potential of the strategic partnership but also serves as a reminder of the EU’s dedication to supporting the ASEAN Community’s building efforts.
