CATL Unveils Revolutionary EV Batteries

BEIJING – Chinese battery manufacturer CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited) has once again demonstrated its leadership in the electric mobility sector. By unveiling three new “super batteries,” the company sets new benchmarks for range, charging speed, and performance in low temperatures. These innovations are expected to further accelerate the global adoption of electric vehicles.

Freevoy Dual Power Battery: 1500 Kilometers on a Single Charge

CATL introduced the Freevoy Dual Power Battery – a groundbreaking dual-system battery capable of enabling electric cars to drive up to 1500 kilometers without recharging, roughly the distance from Berlin to Rome.

The battery combines two different cell types:

  • LFP cells (Lithium Iron Phosphate) designed for durable, everyday use
  • NMC cells (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) offering high energy density for long-distance performance

Additionally, CATL has replaced traditional graphite in part of the battery with a new material that can store more energy, allowing more power to fit into the same space and further extending driving range.

Shenxing Plus: 500 Kilometers of Range in Just Five Minutes of Charging

The second innovation, the enhanced Shenxing Plus Battery, sets a new standard for fast charging.

  • It enables over 500 kilometers of driving range with just five minutes of charging — making EV charging nearly as fast as refueling a gasoline car.
  • The battery also performs impressively under harsh conditions: even at minus 10 degrees Celsius, it can charge to 80% capacity within 15 minutes.

This version is a major upgrade of CATL’s previous Shenxing technology, offering three times faster charging than the earlier model.

New Sodium-Ion Battery: Highly Cold-Resistant and Cost-Effective

The third innovation presented by CATL is a new sodium-ion battery, specifically developed for extremely cold climates.

  • This battery provides reliable performance even in freezing temperatures and could serve as a cost-effective alternative to conventional lithium-based batteries.
  • Sodium is abundantly available, helping to reduce dependence on costly raw materials like lithium and cobalt.

Global Impact Anticipated

Industry analysts view CATL’s latest innovations as a potential game-changer for the EV market:

  • Extended range helps eliminate consumers’ “range anxiety.”
  • Faster charging makes EVs far more practical for everyday use.
  • Improved cold resistance opens new markets for EVs in regions with extreme winters.

Major global automakers, including Tesla, BMW, and Hyundai, are closely monitoring these developments and could soon begin introducing vehicles equipped with CATL’s latest battery technology. (zai)
