5 injured after explosion in Bangkok

Bangkok – Five people have been injured after an explosion and gunfire near a protest site on the edge of Bangkok’s Lumpini Park.

This morning’s attack came after the protesters’ leader warned that government supporters were planning to bring armed militants to Bangkok. Local authorities say there was also an explosion near the office of the opposition Democrat Party. No one was hurt.

During weeks of unrest, protesters have barricaded several main Bangkok intersections. They’ve been interrupted by occasional bombs and gunfire. One blast killed a woman and a young brother and sister in a shopping district on Sunday.

The protesters aim to unseat caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and erase the influence of her brother, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
