Hanoi – Southeast Asia has fared better than most other parts of the world in reducing the spread of COVID-19. While international borders remain mostly closed in Southeast Asia, there are some promising signs that life is slowly returning to normal, outside of tourism. Schools are opening again in some countries, domestic flights are starting to run again, and internal social isolation campaigns are being relaxed.

VIETNAM
COVID-19 Cases:
288 confirmed cases, 252 recoveries, and no deaths
On the Ground:
On 23 April 2020, Vietnamese government lifted social isolation rule, subsequently allowing re-opening of non-essential services including restaurants. On the same day, schools across the country could be re-opened, with dates varying per each province and city’s case. Domestic flights are running again and most tourist sites and business are open.

CAMBODIA
COVID-19 Cases:
122 confirmed cases, 121 recoveries, and no deaths
On the Ground:

LAOS

THAILAND
COVID-19 Cases:

MYANMAR
COVID-19 Cases:
181 confirmed cases, 79 recoveries, 6 deaths
On the Ground:

INDONESIA
COVID-19 Cases:
15438 confirmed cases, 3287 recoveries, 1028 deaths
On the Ground:
The number of cases continues to rise in Indonesia, hence there are partial lockdowns in many areas including Bali. Travel between provinces and islands is restricted and many businesses remain closed.

SINGAPORE
COVID-19 Cases:
25346 confirmed cases, 4809 recoveries, 21 deaths
On the Ground:
Recently there have been a sharp rise in the number of cases so the government has implemented a policy to close all non-essential businesses until 01 June. There are also social isolation rules being enforced.

MALAYSIA
COVID-19 Cases:
6779 confirmed cases, 5281 recoveries, 111 deaths
On the Ground:
After a period of social isolation, some businesses are starting to re-open and tourist sites are re-opening. Domestic flights are starting to run again for domestic travellers.

PHILIPPINES
COVID-19 Cases:
11618 confirmed cases, 2251 recoveries, 772 deaths
On the Ground:
Earlier this week, Philippines enforced modified enhanced community quarantine in high risk cities such as Metro Manila, Laguna and Cebu from 16 to 31 May.
Local governments units in the country have also imposed their own quarantine measures.
Some domestic and international flights are running again.
